Where We Get Our News Matters—Just Like Where We Spend Our Money

We talk a lot at RoesList about voting with your dollars—supporting businesses that reflect your values and uplift your community. But there’s another kind of vote we cast every single day without realizing it: where we get our news. And just like shopping small and local, where you get your information matters. A lot.

In today’s noisy world, trustworthy, fact-based, values-aligned journalism is more important than ever. The news you consume shapes how you view the world—and the decisions you make as a consumer, a business owner, a voter, and a neighbor.

So we thought we’d share a few of our favorite independent, progressive, and community-centered news sources, and why supporting them ties directly into the heart of what we do at RoesList.

Our Favorite Values-Driven News Sources

Here are some outlets we love for honest reporting, thoughtful analysis, and a strong commitment to truth and justice (we also checked all of these outlets on https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/):

Straight Arrow News (SAN) – Straight Arrow News aims to provide unbiased, fact-based journalism by reporting “straight down the middle” and presenting multiple perspectives on current events.

The 19th* – A nonprofit newsroom reporting on gender, politics, and policy. Their journalism is smart, intersectional, and centers voices too often left out of traditional coverage.

Prism – A BIPOC-led, women-led outlet that covers stories on equity, justice, and democracy—told by those most impacted.

Democracy Now! – Independent, global news hosted by Amy Goodman. It’s nonprofit, unflinching, and deeply rooted in human rights and social justice.

News & Business Are Connected

So how does all this tie into RoesList?

Simple: whether you’re reading the news or hiring a plumber, your choices shape the world around you. Supporting independent journalism ensures honest voices stay funded. Supporting small, values-based businesses helps keep our neighborhoods ethical, equitable, and full of integrity.

At RoesList, we’re building a national directory of “blue” businesses—companies that support women’s reproductive rights, LGBTQIA+ inclusion, and racial equity for BIPOC communities. These businesses don’t just do good work—they believe in building a better world.

Just like the news you consume, the businesses you support are part of the ecosystem of change.
